Call Late
If you're driving or getting into town late, you can often score some fantastic deals simply by asking. Often, when you call a hotel later in the evening, they've either sold their rooms or they haven't.
So, if they still have vacancies, don't be afraid to ask “it's already late and your room's unsold, do you think you could do better on the price?” If that doesn't work, quoting a lower price from a competing hotel could get you that fantastic room at a discount.
Hotwire and Priceline
Hotwire and Priceline are two websites that specialize in travel deals. Hotwire works by showing you a hotel's generic details (neighborhood, star level, etc) and then quoting you a great price.
However, you don't know the name of the hotel or where it actually is until after you book. And though they guarantee their star levels, this can be a big risk for some buyers.
Priceline works by either quoting you prices on various hotels or allowing you to name your own price. Basically, you say that you'd be willing to pay $85 a night for a 4-star hotel in Chicago. That's a great deal and if a hotel in your specified area agrees, then you get it.
The catch is that you have to pay before a hotel accepts your offer. You're allowed to specify your star level and the neighborhood where you want your hotel to be located.
AAA or CAA Discounts
If you have a membership with CAA or AAA, great bargains hotels are available to you. Hotels often associate themselves with organizations like the American Automobile Association to attract their members to their hotels.
And did you know that if you belong to the AAA, you can call them from anywhere in the country and they will help you find a hotel close to you and at a good price?
Get Out of Town
If you're looking for bargains, hotels just outside city limits can offer the best deals. For example, an average hotel room in downtown Manhattan might cost you $350 a night. Meanwhile, a hotel in Brooklyn or Hoboken may only cost you $89 a night.
