The cheapest flights are often Tuesday or Wednesday departures and the price tends to drop on Saturday nights.

For example, a travel booking site like Orbitz lets you search all of your 2-3 day trip options to, say, New Orleans for this month. If you’re flexible about exactly when you go, you can save a lot of money.

For example, last year I found a return flight and 2-night hotel package from Seattle to Nashville for $278 with all taxes and surcharges included.
I wasn’t necessarily planning to go to Nashville, but I knew that I had a free weekend, a willingness to travel and the flexibility to just pick an affordable destination.
In return, I had a great weekend at a stellar price and the opportunity to explore one of this country’s coolest cities.
By opening yourself up to new destinations, you can be the person that clicks on last minute discount travel deals that show up in your email inbox. Try it, it’s liberating.

If you want to stay on top of last minute deals, then subscribe to your mileage plan’s email newsletters. If you’re a member of multiple airlines or mileage plans, then subscribe to them all.
It’s sometimes annoying to get recurring emails in your mailbox, but it also keeps you abreast of some of the best last minute and sale prices.
Set a Travel Ticker
If you use a travel booking site like Orbitz or Travelocity or even an aggregator like Kayak, you can set a travel ticker or flight flag that will tell you when a particular flight falls below your set price.
For example, I have a friend who lives in New York, but her family lives in Miami.
Because she likes to visit home as much as possible, she has a travel ticker set that sends her an email notification every time a weekend flight between New York and Miami falls below $275 with all taxes included. She often has to leave last minute, but it’s worth it.
Remember, last minute discount travel deals are abundant but no one said they would be easy.
