Student Discount Airfares: Where to Find Student Flight Deals and Discount Airfares
Though the majority of airlines, particularly discount airlines, no longer offer student discount airfares, there are still deals to be had if you're a student traveler. Keep reading to find out where the best places are to score the hottest deals.
STA Travel Agency
STA Travel is a travel agency that focuses predominantly on youth and student travel customers. They specialize in backpacking adventures, volunteer travel and finding student discount airfares. You can find their offices in most major cities and on many university campuses.
STA Travel (along with companies like Travelcuts, listed below) also sell the International Student Identity Card (ISIC). This is an internationally recognized student identification card that can help get you discounts on everything from airfare to your museum admission.
Travelcuts
Travelcuts is a Canadian company that's very similar to STA Travel. Their offices are usually located on campus or in city centers and they focus on student travel. Despite the ease of finding heavily discounted flights online, I've found that going into a Travelcuts and dealing with a travel agent directly almost always nets me the better price.
Directly Through the Airline
Very few airlines will offer student fares directly anymore. While some continue to sell them through dealers like STA and Travelcuts, most opt to either not offer a student discount or to run it through an agency.
However, airlines like British Airways and Air Canada will still offer student fares, but you must call them directly and ask for the student or youth fare specifically.
It's important to remember though that when you book specially designated student discount airfares, they often come with some pretty strict fare rules.
For example, you're often not allowed to cancel or change your booking or you must pay a hefty fee to do so. Also, you may be required to show student identification or proof that you're under a certain age.
